search engine optimisation
Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the process of making a website as search engine "friendly" as possible. Although overlooked by many web design agencies, the implication of knowledgeable search engine optimisation can often mean the difference between a website achieving great success and a website disappearing into the black hole of cyber space! Having a beautifully designed website is one thing but if no one can find it then is there any point to its existence? Search Engine Optimisation TechniquesModern search engine optimisation methods are continually changing and, when you examine all the areas involved in successful internet marketing, non move as quickly, or as dramatically, as search engine optimisation. The major search engines regularly update and change the way they rank sites and it is the practice of keeping up with these changes which separates the good search engine optimisation companies from the bad ones. At SearchQuest we endeavour to stay one step ahead of the methods which the major search engines use to rank websites. We employ techniques which push our customers' websites into prominent, long lasting search engine positions; however, the search engine optimisation methods we use will never put websites in a compromising position. Many search engine optimisation companies still use "black hat" techniques which can leave a website heavily penalised and often in a position that they cannot recover from. The "black hat" methods that we are referring to include keyword stuffing, link bombing, link farming, hidden text or gateway pages. Web Masters should always stay clear of any of these search engine optimisation techniques! The search engines have outlawed such practices because they affect the relevance of search results and make the internet users experience much less enjoyable. Search Engine Optimisation StagesAt SearchQuest we use proven "white hat" search engine optimisation techniques which are carried out within the guidelines laid down by all the major search engines. We know what the search engines want and we know the best way to give it to them. Before we start work on any site we take the time to research the sites target audience and which keywords they are using to find similar sites. Establishing a strong set of keywords forms the basis of search engine optimisation and getting these correct from the start can make all the difference. Keyword ResearchOnce we have agreed a suitable set of keywords with the client we can get to work on the search engine optimisation of all the coding and "back end" of the site. Firstly we optimise the sites Meta tags: Meta tags contain important information which the search engines use to decipher your sites function and purpose. Without a set of well optimised and thought out Meta tags the search engines will have little idea of what your site is trying to sell or promote. Along side the Meta tags are the Title tags: Title tags dictate what appears in the blue bar across the top of the page and they play an important role in search engine optimisation and which keywords your site ranks for. We then carry the search engine optimisation principals associated with these key areas through the rest of the site. This includes the optimisation of all file names, page names, alt tags and internal linking. CopywritingOnce the "behind the scenes" search engine optimisation has been finished we move on to the viewable, online content which the website visitor sees. It is highly important to provide these visitors with quality information with plenty of substance. This is useful for the customer but it is also excellent from a search engine point of view as search engines cannot see pictures but they can read text. A website with well optimised textual content will always do better than a site which is built purely with images. At SearchQuest we know how to write good, search engine friendly content and we also know how to manipulate existing content to maximise search engine positions. When you combine all these search engine optimisation practices the results are a website that performs well and provides your visitors with a quality online experience, and after all, that is what the search engines want you to do. Give them what they want and there is no reason to fail! |
